Shaping Youth is proud to continue to host our DECEMBER SCREENINGS of Consuming Kids, with a double feature of Captive Audience: Advertising in the Classrooms.

Join us to stem the ‘ho-ho-holiday gimmes’ WITH kids during ‘winter break’ December 29, featuring hands-on media literacy activities starting at 6:30pm!

Kids will become 'hands on advertising executives' and use fun-filled art projects with music and magazines to 'create' a brand and learn how they're being 'targeted' by marketers and how to deconstruct the messages with media literacy insights.

They'll learn label lingo, name generation, how ads appeal to kids with color, sound, endorsements and heroes to shield themselves with knowledge and help their peers do the same. Depending on the group size, we may go online to train them as 'powerful CIA agents' (cyber info advocates!) to explore their favorite sites and play hide and seek with the commercial messages embedded throughout the digital arena.

Both films are produced by the Media Education Foundation and Consuming Kids features the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood staff and Steering Committee...Both are completely FREE and open to the public.

Also...I'm actively seeking youth interested in service credits and internships to explore the positive aspects of media as well as trend-tracking the negative behavioral cues, so come one come all! (parent volunteers too!)

If you'd like to help us organize 2010, we'd love to get the headcount up high enough to move the venue from house party to auditorium! :-)
