TICKET PRICE: FREE, RSVP required below
Summer is coming, school's almost out, and kids will be deluged with marketing messages from amusement parks to blockbuster movies...Come join Shaping Youth for a special double feature to arm kids with critical thinking skills and turn it into a game of media literacy!
We're excited to begin hosting a monthly community screening of the critically-acclaimed new film Consuming Kids, an eye-opening account of the pervasive and pernicious effects of children's advertising on the health and well-being of kids.
The film is produced by the Media Education Foundation and features the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood staff and Steering Committee, and is completely FREE and open to the public.
The screening will be followed by a discussion featuring Amy Jussel, Founder & Exec. Dir. of Shaping Youth and special guests in rotation.
Amy is actively seeking youth interested in service credits and internships to explore the positive aspects of media as well as trend-tracking the negative behavioral cues, so come one come all! (parent volunteers too!)
It's a great chance to chat in a small, intimate setting with large ideas and thought leaders.
Amy will also share info gleaned from the last CCFC summit where she led a workshop with colleagues including CCFC director Dr. Susan Linn, author of Consuming Kids: The Hostile Takeover of Childhood.
Feel free to bring squirm-free sibs and kids that would benefit from this movie message too, as age appropriate. Hope to see you there!
P.S. If we have enough interest in a double-feature format, we'll also be screening "Where Do the Children Play?" the pbs documentary to add a dose of eco-literacy into the mix and get thinking about summer fun outdoors!
During the summer we'll test the concept of a "Dive In Movie" at our pool to move screenings outdoors late into the eve, for parents/kids to float around in innertubes and soak in education as summer fun!
